Taking the step up comes with some risks.

What risks, you might ask?

The qualities and capabilities that get you promoted to first-level leadership can trip you up and potentially derail you at the strategic leadership level.

In the first stages of a leadership career, it's likely you’ll be promoted to a leadership role because of your technical or functional abilities. If you are a competent marketer, for example, you could be promoted to "Marketing Lead."

This level of leadership comes with a heightened level of ego, giving a perception of a confident go-getter, getting things done, and going places

At the next transition where you are required to lead multi-disciplinary teams, the go-getter image becomes tarnished and it’s likely to be seen as an overconfident micro-manager.

Then at the third transition to "leader-of-leaders", a derailment trap surfaces with a much broader scope and set of expectations; unseen, unexpected, and unprepared for.

The word goes around and a rumour spreads "Yes he is highly competent, but is he really strategic?"

Put simply -- what gets you promoted at the first two levels of leadership, potentially trips you up at the third step up to strategic leader.

In extreme cases, overplaying your functional strengths can literally derail your career at a time and level where new opportunities are few and far between.
